Health classes explained

Understanding underwriting classifications: Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard—what each designation represents and how carriers determine your classification.

Insurance carriers assign term policies using rate classifications. Although terminology varies across carriers, the framework remains standard: Preferred Plus (occasionally titled Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, plus additional table ratings for increased-risk situations. Non-tobacco users and tobacco users each have separate classification tiers.

What underwriters look at

Weight and height proportions, blood pressure readings and cholesterol numbers, family illness patterns including early heart disease or cancer, traffic and legal history, current prescriptions, employment and leisure activities, and any nicotine consumption. Achieving the best classification requires strong results in nearly every category; Preferred status allows minor variances; Standard Plus and Standard categories accommodate controlled medical situations such as well-managed high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

The health assessment invites you to self-identify honestly: Excellent health aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus and Average with Standard. Your quote reflects your selected classification; the carrier verifies your final classification after underwriting. When uncertain, request quotes at two classifications to compare, letting the completed application establish your true classification. Overstating your health doesn't reduce the final premium; it only makes the initial quote inaccurate.

Susman Insurance Agency can recommend carriers with more accommodating underwriting for your individual circumstances, which frequently matters more than simply chasing the lowest published rate.
